Winter Trip to Montana!
November 4 - November 8, 2021
Trip Reflections
I took this trip with my two sisters, Kim and Korina, my brother Stephen, and my partner Jordan. While my siblings and I have been to Montana a few times during the summer, this was our first time experiencing it in the winter—and Jordan’s first visit ever. He absolutely loved it. The area was quiet and peaceful, with many parts of Glacier National Park closed for the season and very few tourists around. The hikes, scenic viewpoints, and even downtown Missoula felt calm and uncrowded. I especially loved the soft greens and blues of the winter landscape, the misty mornings, and the cozy holiday atmosphere throughout the city.
Our first night was spent in the cutest cabin-style motel, complete with a lovely view right outside our door. It had such a cozy, rustic charm! The motel also offered a continental breakfast, which was a nice bonus. And just next door, there was an adorable little coffee shop—perfect for a warm drink before heading out to explore.
On the road, stop #1: Flathead Lake!
While Stephen, Kim, Korina, and Jordan wandered off to explore the lake, I found a quiet spot by the water and pulled out my watercolors. It was such a peaceful moment—until my hands started to freeze! By the time I finished painting, I could barely feel my fingers, but it was totally worth it.
Stop #2: Hike in Glacier National Park (A part that wasn’t closed off due to snow)!
The colors were absolutely stunning—soft, muted greens and dusky blues that felt almost dreamlike. Since my siblings hiked at a faster pace, Jordan and I took our time, soaking in the scenery and snapping tons of photos along the way. The views were so surreal, like something out of a painting. When we finally reached the end of the trail, we were greeted by a gorgeous green lake framed by mountain peaks. This time, my sister joined me for some plein air painting—it was such a special moment to capture the view together.
Stop #3: National Bison Range.
Early the next morning, we drive over to the Bison Range - a protected wildlife conservation area, home to lots of bison. We drove around, and made many stops. We saw lots of animals, and of course, lots of bison!
After the Bison range, we got lunch in my dad’s hometown, St. Ignatius Montana.
Stop #4: Missoula
The next day, we ate breakfast at The Trough, highly recommend!
We got to visit my Aunt and Uncle, and have dinner with them.
We walked around downtown Missoula some and did a little shopping.
In the evening, we quickly drove out to this lookout point. The main point as a little farther, but Stephen saw this spot, and had to stop. It was stunning. It was getting dark quickly, so I pulled out my watercolor set and started painting immediately. Stephen brought his camera out and took a lot of photos. At one point, I saw a few bald eagles flying over us, into the scene.
To wrap up the trip, we at dinner downtown Missoula, at an Irish pub. We walked around, and enjoyed a coffee shop for dessert (they had pie)!! It was so good, we went the next day for breakfast, before starting our return journey home.
